Data is one of the most valuable resources that any organisation has, as when utilised correctly, it can be used to greatly improve organisational performance. However, managing high volumes of data is a time-consuming task that many organisations simply do not have the resources or knowledge to correctly handle. In fact, 95% of organisations cite that the need to manage unstructured data is a problem. This can result in missed opportunities, data gaps, and failure to comply with data regulations.

To ensure they are getting the most out of their data, many organisations undergo a data discovery. Data discovery is the process of carrying out a deep dive into your organisation’s data to gain valuable insights. This can be carried out as a standalone task, or as the first step in a digital transformation project. The data discovery process involves working closely with key stakeholders to identify existing challenges and set objectives, before carrying out an audit of your existing technology and systems. Once the audit has been completed, a report summarising findings and presenting recommendations and a roadmap will be provided.

Key benefits of carrying out a data discovery include:

Improved understanding of data – when you are manually managing large amounts of data it can be difficult to understand exactly what data you have, or what data you need. During the data discovery process, your current technology and systems will be audited, with key findings presented to your team in a simplified report, providing you with valuable insights

Identify opportunities and weaknesses – as well as presenting findings, recommendations will also be provided on how your organisation can improve performance. This will include any opportunities that your team can take advantage of, and any weaknesses that your team should be aware of. Alongside the recommendations, a recommended roadmap will be shared that outlines the steps that should be taken to carry out the changes successfully

Compliance with data regulations – there are many laws in place regarding the storage and use of data, including the Data Protection Act and GDPR. When you have one employee or a small team manually managing your data it can be impossible to ensure that you are fully compliant. Failure to comply with these laws can result in serious consequences, including fines, legal action, and a bad reputation. Carrying out a data discovery will allow any potential breaches to be identified, with a plan to rectify them

Improved decision making – unless you are a trained data analyst, understanding and analysing large volumes of data can be difficult. When carrying out a data discovery, valuable insights can be gained from the data, regarding areas including customer behaviour or employee performance. These insights can then be used to improve the decision-making process, as well-informed, data-backed decisions are more likely to create positive, effective results

Increased productivity and efficiency – during a data discovery, recommendations are provided, that if followed, increase productivity and efficiency within your organisation. A clear roadmap will be provided that will clearly outline the steps that must be taken to achieve this

Since the launch of an early version of gauge.it, we have received excellent feedback from leadership teams who report feeling more connected to their employees and see real value from daily reporting revealing trends in wellbeing across their team. With this full version release, we are excited that gauge.it now has more powerful reporting and new tools to assess employee morale.”

“Through Microsoft AppSource, customers around the world can easily find tailored line-of-business partner solutions that work with the products they already use,” said Toby Bowers, General Manager, Business Applications Group, Microsoft Corp. “We’re happy to welcome Cloud Cover IT’s solution to the growing AppSource ecosystem.”

The age of Digital Transformation is over. The last great shift was about “going digital”. The next great shift is about “getting smart”.

AI, machine learning, and smart automation will drive 70% of GDP growth over the next decade. In this new “Machine Economy“, data will continue to increase in both volume and value, and many data teams are already struggling to keep up. But where do marketing teams fit into all of this?

Well, this exploding amount of data can actually bode well for marketers.

By leveraging important, meaningful data, marketing teams can get to know their audience better, personalise customers’ experience, and ultimately, meet the goals that are going to increase ROI. There is no doubt that data can be used to put together an effective brand strategy that fuels the overall growth of the brand.

That all sounds great, right? But where is the proof that these data-empowered strategies work?

EasyJet

To celebrate its 20th birthday, the travel company took personalisation to a whole new level. In one campaign, EasyJet used the travel history of each of its customers to create a personalised experience. They used historical customer data to do this, for example, looking at when they first travelled with the airline to make predictions about where they were likely to go next. They used highly personalised emails in the campaign, and curated copy based on 28 data sources. The result? The open rates from this campaign were 100% more than their typical newsletters, along with a 25% higher CTR. Impressive, right?

Sephora

The beauty giant is all about personalisation – their website is set up to show the customer what they want. From product discovery tools to customised loyalty rewards, it’s no wonder Sephora is so successful. Their homepage displays recommended products to each customer, and the entire selection uses data based on their past purchases and browsing activity. In addition, they have a section on the homepage that shows its newly released products in the “new for you” feed of recommendations, personalising the experience even further. These are just a few of the data-empowered marketing strategies that have led to its success.

Under Armour

Under Armour is another brand that uses data at the core of its marketing campaigns. They take data from the their own app and fitness community to tap into customers’ behaviours and create their marketing strategies accordingly. Their online fitness community has over 200 million users, with an insane amount of data available – Under Armour gathers insights from users who have purchased health-tracking devices, as well as their activity in fitness apps, such as MyFitnessPal. So, when it comes to curating campaigns, the brand can, yet again, personalise the user experience – they use the data available to determine how often they should message the customer, at what times, and what products they should offer. Meaning that customer engagement is higher, as is the ROI.

Netflix

And finally, of course, we have Netflix. The streaming service uses data processing software, as well as traditional BI tools, and open-source solutions, to gather and store information about their consumers. This helps the brand focus on what to promote to specific viewers – most notably the “Recommended for You” section. As a result, the service sees a high engagement rate with “Netflix Original” series and films – the service actually renews 93% of its original series! This directly contributes to increased revenue, viewership, and of course engagement.

What are you waiting for?

When used correctly, marketing analytics are an extremely useful resource that helps maximise your ROI, improves the performance of your campaigns AND results in happier customers. Of course, implementing this is easier said than done. Knowing what data to pull together, investigating what it’s telling you, and then drawing out actionable insights from it takes time and a lot of effort, if you do it manually.

Here at Cloud Cover IT, we can help make this process more efficient and productive by implementing TimeXtender. TimeXtender is a data estate builder that fully automates the data management process. That means no more time wasted manually collating high volumes of data from different sources and creating overly complicated reports. Instead, you can focus on using your newfound understanding of your customers to build meaningful campaigns that generate results.

Aaron Watt, BI Solutions Developer at Cloud Cover IT

Over the last few months, Microsoft Teams has become the go-to platform for remote working to work effortlessly. From a quick chat on the messenger function to easy file sharing and collaboration to the team video calls with the odd interruption. With all of us looking at Teams all-day, Microsoft has been hard at work integrating Power BI.

Fully integrated App

Microsoft has integrated the Power BI portal into the Teams platform. You can now access all your reports from the side bar without having to go anywhere else. Forgot those figures for this month’s sales in the meeting? You can quickly click the Power BI icon and have all the information at your fingertips.

Teams Group Integration

To improve your team’s workflow, you can add a Power BI report into a team’s group. It can empower the team as they have oversight to the reports and have a closer eye on their KPIs enabling them to work smarter and make informed decisions.

Microsoft has also added a chat window for Power BI. This helps encourage a data culture by getting everyone involved discussing the data that impacts them daily.

Dashboards can be fully integrated to Teams and updated regularly

Power BI Service Integration

There have also been changes to the Power BI service to bring Power BI and Teams closer together. While viewing a report in the Power BI Service you can now click ‘chat’ in teams to send the report to a team’s group. With this, you can spotlight a certain visual so everyone can see exactly what part of the report you are talking about. A great tool to focus the attention during meetings.

E-wallet Sales Analysis by Month has been highlighted in the chat to focus the team’s attention to this section of the report

The switch to remote working and digital collaboration makes Power BI’s integration to Teams even more important. Dashboards give staff more information on how the business and their team is performing, KPI’s and objectives can be easily set against current data and staff are more empowered to make the right decisions. It’s the improved efficiency.

One of the themes at Microsoft’s Ignite conference in 2020 was empowerment. Out of all the products in the Microsoft stack, personally I do not think there is one that deserves this title more than Power BI.

The public release of Power BI five years ago shook the world of data analytics. It made business intelligence affordable and approachable for all, no matter size from one person operations to fortune 500 companies.

It has been great watching Power BI develop from not much more than an excel skin to a fully featured cloud data analytics tool and the journey doesn’t stop there. Every month Microsoft release an update and without fail, there’s always something new to empower decision making through using data intelligently.

Empowering individuals

Power BI empowers individuals by allowing them to take back control of their data. No longer do users have to contact IT professionals to make changes. Basing decisions on incomplete information can be as bad as basing it on information that is wrong, and Power BI helps to stop this from happening.

Here are some of the features that allow individuals to be more agile and empower their decision making:

Self-Service Analytics: Power BI desktop’s intuitive user interface lets users with little experience build their own dashboards and add missing pieces in minutes to suit their own needs.

Data Flows: Data Flows is one of the relatively new features. It allows users to mashup multiple data sets to compare and contrast then develop an integrated report.

Question and Answer: Question and Answer uses Microsoft cognitive services. It is able to understand the English language. All you need to do is ask it a question and it will show you what you’ve asked for, building the element into the report for you.

Empowering teams

The big difference between Power BI and other data analytics tools is that it encourages collaboration between team members; much like the other Microsoft applications and tools. Once a report and published to a workspace, anyone in that workspace can view, modify, and transform the report and can build their own report based the data presented.

This allows a team to all piece together their own insights and, therefore, empowering the team to make smarter decisions.

Empowering organisations

Traditionally business intelligence wasn’t readily available to SME’s due to the high cost of the software and the need for IT professionals to configure, maintain and manage the reporting infrastructure. This led to large amounts of time and money being invested before getting a single report. With Power BI, the entire estate is managed in the cloud. There’s no costly infrastructure to be maintained by IT professionals as it’s per user licence, so you can buy as many or as few as you’d like and only roll out Power BI fully once you know it’s right for you.

Aaron Watt, BI Solutions Developer at Cloud Cover IT

The way we work has changed. From being in a physical workspace with colleagues to working remotely, creating home offices. It is not without its issues. The speed at which we moved to home working was sure to throw some curve balls – collaboration, reporting and informing staff.

Keeping up with project management, tracking data and analysis had, for many, become chaotic and scattered. At Cloud Cover we recognised some, if not all our clients had been affected by this. So, we are accelerating the shift to a data driven culture and hope to inspire and assist our clients to do the same.

Utilising Power BI, we have migrated our data to the platform which allows up to build tailored dashboards to keep up to date and make informed decisions based on real time data and insights. With this insight, our team can collaborate on reports and identify key areas of improvement, working together to get the job done.

Traditionally, businesses reported data on Excel and many still do but without that physical presence to get fully involved with the spreadsheet, it can throw a spanner in the works. Power BI eliminates this. It is easy to set up, user friendly and you can personalise it to fit your needs to get those meaningful insights without digging.

So Why Choose Power BI over spreadsheets?

1. Visualise your data

One of the standout features of Power BI is the ability to transform data into visually pleasing and consumable graphics. Charts, images, and graphs can tell you in real time how the data is performing. The dashboards are completely customisable to the needs of the organisation, team, or department, helping to inform the decision-making process.

2. Collaboration

Power Bi allows users to share reports with anyone in the organisation and allow multiple users to work on the same report or create new reports off the existing data sets while ensuring the data is secure. You can add Power BI reports to Teams. The integration into everyone’s workflow means teams can start discussions about the data no matter where they are working.

3. Mobile

Whether you are in the office, home or even the coffee shop you can securely access and view your reports and dashboards with applications for Windows, Android and IOS devices. This enables the user to annotate, comment, and share reports on the move.

4. Automation

The automation ability within Power BI can transform your data and help the user to build the report once. After this, a schedule can be set for the report to refresh and get the latest data. Allowing hours of time to be saved each week as you no longer need to search for this month’s data or wait for someone else to finish what they are working on to put data from a single source.

5. Self Service

Power BI follows the same principals as the rest of the Power platform with no-code to low-code. This allows anyone of any skill level to jump straight in and build or modify reports. Eliminating the need for specialised staff or resources compared to traditional BI reporting tools.
