Data is one of the most valuable resources that any organisation has, as when utilised correctly, it can be used to greatly improve organisational performance. However, managing high volumes of data is a time-consuming task that many organisations simply do not have the resources or knowledge to correctly handle. In fact, 95% of organisations cite that the need to manage unstructured data is a problem. This can result in missed opportunities, data gaps, and failure to comply with data regulations.

To ensure they are getting the most out of their data, many organisations undergo a data discovery. Data discovery is the process of carrying out a deep dive into your organisation’s data to gain valuable insights. This can be carried out as a standalone task, or as the first step in a digital transformation project. The data discovery process involves working closely with key stakeholders to identify existing challenges and set objectives, before carrying out an audit of your existing technology and systems. Once the audit has been completed, a report summarising findings and presenting recommendations and a roadmap will be provided.

Key benefits of carrying out a data discovery include:

Improved understanding of data – when you are manually managing large amounts of data it can be difficult to understand exactly what data you have, or what data you need. During the data discovery process, your current technology and systems will be audited, with key findings presented to your team in a simplified report, providing you with valuable insights

Identify opportunities and weaknesses – as well as presenting findings, recommendations will also be provided on how your organisation can improve performance. This will include any opportunities that your team can take advantage of, and any weaknesses that your team should be aware of. Alongside the recommendations, a recommended roadmap will be shared that outlines the steps that should be taken to carry out the changes successfully

Compliance with data regulations – there are many laws in place regarding the storage and use of data, including the Data Protection Act and GDPR. When you have one employee or a small team manually managing your data it can be impossible to ensure that you are fully compliant. Failure to comply with these laws can result in serious consequences, including fines, legal action, and a bad reputation. Carrying out a data discovery will allow any potential breaches to be identified, with a plan to rectify them

Improved decision making – unless you are a trained data analyst, understanding and analysing large volumes of data can be difficult. When carrying out a data discovery, valuable insights can be gained from the data, regarding areas including customer behaviour or employee performance. These insights can then be used to improve the decision-making process, as well-informed, data-backed decisions are more likely to create positive, effective results

Increased productivity and efficiency – during a data discovery, recommendations are provided, that if followed, increase productivity and efficiency within your organisation. A clear roadmap will be provided that will clearly outline the steps that must be taken to achieve this

Employee wellbeing has become a hot topic in recent years, with staff members increasingly prioritising their own wellbeing. A recent study confirmed that 77% of employees would consider leaving a company that doesn’t focus on wellbeing, and 83% of employees believe that their wellbeing is just as important as their salary. To avoid high staff turnover, it is essential that leadership also prioritise employee wellbeing.

However, many organisations are struggling to implement employee wellbeing initiatives, particularly when employees are based in different locations. When employees are working remotely, it can be difficult to remain connected and monitor the morale within the team. Failing to take action can result in serious consequences, including disengaged employees, widespread low morale, and increased absence rates.

Our app gauge.it was created to overcome this challenge and offer organisations a simple, user-friendly solution. Available on Microsoft Teams, gauge.it helps foster employee wellbeing by helping leaders stay connected to their employees, regardless of location. It empowers employees by giving them the ability to share how they are feeling openly and honestly on a daily basis, providing leaders with valuable insight into team morale and wellbeing.

Our Head of Technology, Alasdair Gauld, recently hosted a webinar discussing the importance of employee wellbeing and demonstrating how gauge.it can help improve it. You can watch the full video below:

The 27th of February – 5th of March was Cyber Scotland Week – a week dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of cyber resilience and educating organisations and individuals on how to remain protected against cyber threats.

As cyber-attacks become increasingly frequent and advanced, this is more essential than ever. It was great to see so many organisations get involved, with events taking place throughout the country, and lots of valuable content being shared online.

Cloud Cover IT’s Managing Director Lance Gauld, Head of Technology Jim Murray, and Group Commercial Director Steven Turner had a great discussion about all things cyber security. They discussed key topics including: why organisations are reluctant to invest in cyber security, how to detect when a hacker is in your system, and how important it is that employees are trained to recognise cyber-attacks. Lance and Jim even shared their top tips for organisations looking to take those first practical steps towards cyber resilience. You can watch the video below:

As discussed in the video, it is essential that your organisation understands the risk and has security measures in place to prevent falling victim to a cyber-attack. If you would like to discuss any of the topics covered in the chat, or have any questions about how your organisation gets started on their journey, simply email sales@cloudcoverit.co.uk and we’d be happy to help.

Scottish Digital Transformation company Cloud Cover IT has announced the official launch of their gauge.it application for Microsoft Teams.

gauge.it creates a safe space for employees to communicate important aspects of their wellbeing safely and anonymously, giving leadership critical insights into employee morale – all within Microsoft Teams, the most used business communication platform with over 270 million users. gauge.it allows business leaders to automatically send a daily card to their team allowing them to rate their day by selecting the emoji that best represents their mood and adding an optional, anonymous comment. The power of the system is in providing leadership with a simple breakdown of the team’s input, allowing changes and trends in morale to be identified within localised and remote teams.

“The concept of gauge.it was created in 2021 as we were finding it increasingly difficult to monitor the wellbeing of the team, who had moved from office-based working to working from home.” Cloud Cover IT’s Head of Digital Transformation Alasdair Gauld explains. “We recognised the consequences that can result from employees feeling isolated and wanted to create a simple solution that would allow us to remain connected to our team, regardless of their location. Since the launch of an early version of gauge.it, we have received excellent feedback from leadership teams who report feeling more connected to their employees and see real value from daily reporting revealing trends in wellbeing across their team. With this full version release, we are excited that gauge.it now has more powerful reporting and new tools to assess employee morale.”

“Through Microsoft AppSource, customers around the world can easily find tailored line-of-business partner solutions that work with the products they already use,” said Toby Bowers, General Manager, Business Applications Group, Microsoft Corp. “We’re happy to welcome Cloud Cover IT’s solution to the growing AppSource ecosystem.”

The age of Digital Transformation is over. The last great shift was about “going digital”. The next great shift is about “getting smart”.

AI, machine learning, and smart automation will drive 70% of GDP growth over the next decade. In this new “Machine Economy“, data will continue to increase in both volume and value, and many data teams are already struggling to keep up. But where do marketing teams fit into all of this?

Well, this exploding amount of data can actually bode well for marketers.

By leveraging important, meaningful data, marketing teams can get to know their audience better, personalise customers’ experience, and ultimately, meet the goals that are going to increase ROI. There is no doubt that data can be used to put together an effective brand strategy that fuels the overall growth of the brand.

That all sounds great, right? But where is the proof that these data-empowered strategies work?

EasyJet

To celebrate its 20th birthday, the travel company took personalisation to a whole new level. In one campaign, EasyJet used the travel history of each of its customers to create a personalised experience. They used historical customer data to do this, for example, looking at when they first travelled with the airline to make predictions about where they were likely to go next. They used highly personalised emails in the campaign, and curated copy based on 28 data sources. The result? The open rates from this campaign were 100% more than their typical newsletters, along with a 25% higher CTR. Impressive, right?

Sephora

The beauty giant is all about personalisation – their website is set up to show the customer what they want. From product discovery tools to customised loyalty rewards, it’s no wonder Sephora is so successful. Their homepage displays recommended products to each customer, and the entire selection uses data based on their past purchases and browsing activity. In addition, they have a section on the homepage that shows its newly released products in the “new for you” feed of recommendations, personalising the experience even further. These are just a few of the data-empowered marketing strategies that have led to its success.

Under Armour

Under Armour is another brand that uses data at the core of its marketing campaigns. They take data from the their own app and fitness community to tap into customers’ behaviours and create their marketing strategies accordingly. Their online fitness community has over 200 million users, with an insane amount of data available – Under Armour gathers insights from users who have purchased health-tracking devices, as well as their activity in fitness apps, such as MyFitnessPal. So, when it comes to curating campaigns, the brand can, yet again, personalise the user experience – they use the data available to determine how often they should message the customer, at what times, and what products they should offer. Meaning that customer engagement is higher, as is the ROI.

Netflix

And finally, of course, we have Netflix. The streaming service uses data processing software, as well as traditional BI tools, and open-source solutions, to gather and store information about their consumers. This helps the brand focus on what to promote to specific viewers – most notably the “Recommended for You” section. As a result, the service sees a high engagement rate with “Netflix Original” series and films – the service actually renews 93% of its original series! This directly contributes to increased revenue, viewership, and of course engagement.

What are you waiting for?

When used correctly, marketing analytics are an extremely useful resource that helps maximise your ROI, improves the performance of your campaigns AND results in happier customers. Of course, implementing this is easier said than done. Knowing what data to pull together, investigating what it’s telling you, and then drawing out actionable insights from it takes time and a lot of effort, if you do it manually.

Here at Cloud Cover IT, we can help make this process more efficient and productive by implementing TimeXtender. TimeXtender is a data estate builder that fully automates the data management process. That means no more time wasted manually collating high volumes of data from different sources and creating overly complicated reports. Instead, you can focus on using your newfound understanding of your customers to build meaningful campaigns that generate results.

If you’d like to learn more about TimeXtender, please email sales@cloudcoverit.co.uk .

As the reliance on technology increases, the volume and intensity of cyber-attacks is also unfortunately rising. In 2021/2022, the cost of losses caused by cybercrime was £3 billion in the UK alone. Organisations of all different shapes, sizes, and industries are all vulnerable to cyber-attacks and falling victim to one can be fatal, so it is essential that every company has security measures in place to prevent attacks and protect their systems and data. The security of our client’s IT architecture and systems is a top priority for us, and with our ISO27001 certification, you can be assured that we have the best possible systems in place. Here are three measures that we recommend to our clients that will help minimise the risk of falling victim to a cyber-attack.

Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a simple solution that adds an extra layer of security to your organisation’s systems and data. Once MFA has been implemented within your organisation, users will be required to verify their identify through two different methods before they can access the system. The most common first barrier is still username and password, which is unfortunately not enough against advanced attacks. MFA then adds a second barrier such as an authenticator app (we recommend the Microsoft Authenticator app), text message, or fingerprint.

Learn more about MFA here.

Cyber Essentials Certification

The Cyber Essentials Certification is a UK Government-backed scheme that has been designed to help organisations learn how to prevent and protect against basic cyber threats. To achieve the Cyber Essentials Certification, organisations must demonstrate that they have a foundational level of security in place within its IT architecture. Many cyber-attacks are very juvenile in nature and can be thwarted with basic protection, the Cyber Essentials Certification ensures organisations have the knowledge that they need to recognise these threats. It is also increasingly becoming a requirement from organisations within the public sector, that they will only work with organisations that have the certification.

Learn more about the Cyber Essentials Accreditation here.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365

Microsoft provides many powerful services within Microsoft 365 (M365), but a comprehensive backup of M365 data is unfortunately not one of them. As confirmed in the Microsoft Shared Responsibility model, the backup of data is the sole responsibility of the organisation. Unprotected data is at risk of security threats, accidental or intentional deletion, and retention policy gaps. To keep your data safe, we recommend implementing Veeam Backup for M365. This eliminates the risk of losing access and control over your organisation’s data, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft Teams.

Learn more about Veeam Backup for M365 here.

Digital Transformation can seem like an intimidating prospect that many organisations struggle to understand. Cloud Cover IT’s Marketing Coordinator Emma Peters recently had a chance to sit down with Head of Digital Transformation Alasdair Gauld to discuss what Digital Transformation means to him, changes in technology, and celebrating the company’s 10 birthday.

Congratulations on Cloud Cover IT’s 10th birthday! How do you feel about celebrating a decade of the business?

I feel proud of what we are continuing to build. It has been interesting to see how the company has grown over the 10 years, and not only that it has been able to adapt but also thrives on adapting as technology moves.

Tech moves quickly, how would you say Cloud Cover IT has evolved through the last 10 years and how has the company adapted to changes?

It really does move quickly, just this morning I’ve been with my team looking at a brand-new Microsoft Power Apps feature that we think will have lots of applications for the things we build, proving that technology literally moves on a day-to-day basis.

Even going back to the very start of the company, Lance and I had a discussion about what the company name should be. We talked through various options, including Cloud Cover. I was a bit unsure as I didn’t quite know where the industry was going at that point, but it was the start of the Cloud boom within large organisations, and Lance predicted that in the next few years every organisation would be reliant on Cloud-based services. He was right, so he was ahead of the curve there.

It has been interesting to see how the different departments within the business have grown alongside the changes within different areas of IT, and how agile and quickly the business has adapted.

You joined the company in 2019 as Head of Digital Transformation. What does digital transformation mean to you, and can you tell us about the work your team carries out?

To me, digital transformation brings together two key elements: a deep understanding of what a company or team is trying to achieve, and the skills of my team in knowing where technology can help to do that better. Systems only ever work where the people who use them see real value, so as the name suggests any transformation needs to bring real value to the company and individuals doing it. The incredible digital tools available now provide a real opportunity for companies to do things better and more efficiently, allowing the staff involved to focus on bringing real value to the things that humans do better.

There is a lot of competition within the tech industry – what sets your team apart?

We established the company by saying that we would be great at the human part of IT. We achieve this by focusing on User-centric design when developing any solutions for our clients. With a background in product design, we have grown the Digital Transformation team to work with this process when we engage with any of our clients as no two are alike. By combining this with our multidisciplinary development team we aim to deliver successful Microsoft 365 Solutions.

What would you say are the main motivators for your team?

Being able to bring leading technology to our clients and seeing how our solutions are benefiting day-to-day working lives motivates us. My team are also always excited to continue learning and we enjoy keeping up with the latest technology. As we all know, Microsoft’s innovation cycles are fast and constantly moving all of their products forward – the team are always up for the challenge of trying new things and more importantly identifying where it will benefit our clients.

One thing we like to say here at CCIT is that we are the best at the ‘human part of IT’. What does this mean to you?

We all know that IT can be stressful for people as not everyone has the same level of technical understanding. For me, the human part is understanding this and being able to recognise when it is necessary to change the approach when engaging with different users to reduce any unnecessary stress caused by going too technical.

What are your proudest achievements from your time at Cloud Cover IT?

Being able to get two products successfully uploaded onto the app store within Microsoft [our Microsoft Teams apps check.it and gauge.it] has been a very proud achievement for my team and me.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned?

That it’s far better to work as a team to come up with a solution than to try and think of one in isolation – something that has been put to the test over the last couple of years as the team has adapted to initially remote working and now hybrid working.

Do you have any advice for anyone looking to join the tech industry today?

I would recommend that newcomers start by learning low code as it is a great way to begin building that development structure in an easy environment. There are also lots of communities out there that can help and support you, utilise them.

We’ve discussed how the tech industry has changed; how do you think it will continue to change?

I believe that as the cloud continues to grow, the way users understand and consume data will head toward a more interactive future. I’m looking forward to seeing if this does happen, and the impact it will have not only on Cloud Cover IT, but the whole industry.

Are there any exciting projects that the Digital Transformation team are working on right now (that you can tell us about)?

There are a lot of exciting things happening in the Microsoft Teams and Power Platform environment right now that we are focusing on. I can’t give too many details, but there are a few things in the pipeline at the moment that will make the rest of 2022 very exciting!

Where would you like CCIT to be in 10 years’ time?

I would like to be able to look back to this point and see continuous growth between now and then. Part of this would be continuing to grow our presence both throughout the UK and internationally as we continue to grow as a company.

Alasdair will be hosting a free virtual event on the 15th of July 2022. Book your spot here to attend ‘Lunch and Learn: Improve Employee Wellbeing with gauge.it’ and hear Alasdair discuss our new Microsoft Teams app.

“Cloud Cover IT is committed to eliminating discrimination and encouraging diversity within our workplace. Our aim is that the workforce will be truly representative of all sections of society and each person feels respected and able to give their best.”

I wanted to get this in early, these are the opening words of our company’s Equality and Diversity policy which goes on to set out our commitments and the responsibilities of the directors in ensuring that it happens. I agree with its commitment and with its objective.

Part One: Are we “Truly Representative”?

… I look around our team and, what I see is not “truly representative” of the diversity of the communities that I live and work within.

A little over 10% of our team are female, almost everyone is White European with a Canadian thrown into the mix. Me? I’m a white, 50something CIS male (who had to google CIS male). I have pronouns displayed on my LinkedIn profile and, in my quieter moments, despair not only that we still have an inclusivity problem but, that I am a part of that problem.

It’s a wider Society Problem.

It’s a Business Problem.

It’s a Tech Sector Problem.

It’s our Companies Problem.

It is My Problem.

Part Two: “Are we doing anything for Pride?”

This innocuous Teams Message popped up from a colleague about three weeks ago. I reply, “Of course, we can do one of those nice rainbow logo thingies, that will look great.”

I start to question this; What if we get criticised? We aren’t really bandwagon kind of people. I really don’t like how some other companies “Do Pride”.

It’s not going to turn into a single extra enquiry, contract or invoice.

Just leave it? Yeah, that’s the easiest thing to do.

Despite these entirely rational arguments, the question stays with me and, I discuss it with colleagues, family, and some LGBTQ+ rights activists who I know.

Part Three: “Not everyone feels included in our Inclusive world.”

My conversation with a Trans activist stayed with me. “Not everyone feels safe to be who they are.”

I lean back on my trusty Equality and Diversity policy…. “There you go, you’re safe here, everyone is.”

“Prove it,” they say…

I look around our team and, what I see is not “truly representative” of the diversity of the communities that I live and work within.

A little over 10% of our team are female

Almost everyone is White European; I hear the Canadian from across the office; phew!

Let’s start to address this problem, we know that diversity is an advantage, diverse teams work better, solve problems faster and, frankly, have more fun doing it.

It’s a Society Opportunity.

It’s a Business Opportunity.

It’s a Tech Sector Opportunity.

It’s our Company’s Opportunity.

It is My Challenge.

Part Four: Yes, we are doing something. Not for Pride but for our future.

We’ve done one of those coloured logo thingies…

Using the colours of the inclusivity flag designed by Daniel Quasar in 2018, we hope that this is a visual representation not only of our commitment to strive for inclusivity in our team, our work, and our ethos but that it represents our celebration of and our positivity towards diversity.

During June this year, we will review and change how we communicate, how we recruit, how we reach out and, importantly how we act. When our outward-facing logo goes back to brand colours, we will have made lasting changes to how we include others.

I don’t yet know what those changes will be but, I know we will be better and stronger for them.

If you read this and feel that changing our logo colours for a few weeks a year and writing an inclusivity blog is appropriating for gain, I hear you and I wrestle with your criticism honestly.

If you see a sincere effort to play a small part in a big challenge, thank you and, if you have a part to play, join us.

I want to hear from you whatever opinion you hold on this, your input will shape what we do next.

———————————————-

Cloud Cover IT is a Glasgow Based IT company, 10 years old, 40 staff and generally, I think, a great place to work.

Steven Turner is Commercial Director at Cloud Cover IT.

Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute to this and helps me to form my opinions. Never stop.

Gordon Fleming is the Head of Technology and Operations at Cloud Cover IT. He has experience of working as both an IT Managed Service provider, and as a member of an in-house IT department. Below, he examines the main differences between the options, and the pros and cons.

Over the past 15 years or so, I have had the pleasure of working with and for many companies in various roles and positions. From In-House IT to the Managed Service providers. The big to the small.

Companies all need varying degrees of support and that choice of how we decide to protect and provide for our IT from the passing of time, security concerns, and day-to-day issues can be a tricky one to navigate. We can employ a whole team, employ an individual, hand a current staff member who is reasonably IT Savvy the keys to the server room, or look to the world of Managed Service Providers.

Each has its benefits and pitfalls.

Having your own team on payroll running around your office with your business interests being their top priority sounds like the best solution here. Right?

For the most part yes. You get the day-to-day staff familiarity, availability, historical knowledge, and care that an employee would give for his or her company. However, lurking in the shadows is that question all employers hate to ask themselves… what if this employee left? What uncalculated and irreplaceable knowledge is the business losing from their departure? What will happen to the remaining members of the team?

I’ve known many companies that have a team of 3 or 4 core IT staff that have been around through the tough times and the busy times. The failed migrations and the big disasters. The team can be found reminiscing about “the bad times” in the IT dept after a hard day’s work. They depend on each other’s gaps in knowledge, ability to work late, and a good sense of humour to get through challenging days. But like all good teams, it needs the group to succeed. Budget cuts or changes in business strategy can push some to the fringes and into the eyes and ears of other companies looking to refresh and reinvigorate these IT workers. A story that I have seen many times before. When one leaves the others are given the workload that’s leftover and the exodus begins.

It’s not all gloom and doom. If managed and cared for correctly, the in-house IT dept can be a thriving place where well-executed change and performance gains are attributes recognized company-wide.

Companies that opt for the Managed Service Provider have a different set of challenges and rewards to deal with.

Who do you award the contract to? The company in your city that can be on-site in 10-15 minutes, or the huge UK wide provider with the flashy sales pitch but next to no geographical presence in your area? A tricky call for sure for anyone tasked with ensuring that someone looks after the IT operations of your company. The reward for this strategy, if placed in the right hands of course, is a constant headcount of skilled and accountable IT support personnel. Account management and escalation points that would not exist in-house. Clout when it comes to procurement and project management expertise. A depth of technological experience that obscures traditional in-house teams. Most importantly a scalable and reliable IT presence on the books and peace of mind for you and the management you report to.

The cons of this strategy? For most this comes down to cost. There is a middle ground where Managed Services Providers sit within industry sizes, and it tends to be in the Small to Medium-sized enterprise markets where they thrive. Striking a balance between cost, risk, and reward they operate and provide an ideal solution for most businesses in this sphere.

Having sat on both sides of the fence, I cannot honestly say which one I prefer outright. I love being in an environment where I can speak face to face with my customer base, be that colleagues or clients, and working with a team that has potential and a desire to help and enhance IT for others.

Sitting here at my desk at Cloud Cover, I genuinely feel that I have both feet on the side of this virtual fence and as a result I, and the customers we serve, reap the benefits. We operate with the sincerity, care and concern of an in-house IT operation but have the in-depth knowledge and expertise of a managed service provider. We don’t run a heavy sales operation like the huge UK wide operations that make our clients feel like a drop in the ocean or just another client in a database.

Making the transition back from in-house IT to outsourced was a tricky decision for me at the end of last year. Ending an 8-year run in a seat working for your own company was a tough call but having landed here at Cloud Cover IT, I can with no doubt say that the choice I made was the right one and I don’t regret it for one minute.

How do you feel about reaching a decade of Cloud Cover IT? Distinctly older! I never considered when we started up 10 years ago that we would be sitting with over 35 staff now. I still get up in the morning excited to go to work because there are always interesting things going on. Of course, with everything, there can still be bad days, but most of the time it’s still very interesting and I can see that we are still growing. I didn’t expect it to be like this 10 years ago if I’m honest I’m still a bit surprised! Has it been a quick 10 years? It has rocketed by! There have been so many adventures, work and personal.
Cloud Cover IT is celebrating it’s 10th birthday in April 2022. To mark the occasion, Marketing Coordinator Emma Peters caught up with Founder and Managing Director Lance Gauld.

Congratulations on Cloud Cover IT’s 10th birthday!

So much has happened in the last 10 years, so I can’t complain, it has gone in a blink of an eye.

In 2012, Felix Baumgartner jumped off a balloon 13 miles above the earth , Tim Cook was taking the reins at Apple and, we were excited about the iPhone 5 (Actually the best iPhone ever) and, Microsoft launched Windows8.Tech moves quickly, how would you say Cloud Cover IT has evolved through the 10 years and how have you adapted to changes?

As with everything we have had to adapt very quickly to change. It is interesting though, when you go back and look at 2012, 2002, or 1992, the actual way of doing things hasn’t changed as much as it has changed in the last two years. The last 10 years have of course been very important, but the last two years have been extremely important.

One thing we like to say here at CCIT is that we are the best at the ‘human part of IT’. What does this mean to you?

That means that we try to talk in plain English to our customers. I wasn’t brought up with IT, I got into it at 22/23 and had to learn it in plain English, ergo I find it easier to talk to people about the benefits of what IT does, rather than talking about RAMs, Chips etc. That has really helped us, the ethos of talk in plain English to people, don’t hide behind the scientific talk. Don’t try to bamboozle clients, speak to them in a way everyone will understand.

What are your proudest achievements from the last 10 years?

Bringing my son Alasdair into the business has been fantastic. The pride and fear of being responsible for 35 people’s livelihoods. I feel proud that we help people provide for their families, as family is very important to me. The achievements of March 2020, the challenge of helping 3000 – 4000 people work from home was immense, as was the amount of work we put in. We helped companies across many of the key industries during the pandemic.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learnt?

It’s not what you know, it is who you know and how you make use of your contacts. It’s also employing the right people, I don’t get involved in the tech anymore, I am reliant on my team. It’s building teams and getting people to work together that’s the biggest lesson. Probably before 10 years passed, everything used to just be me, but now I’ve realized I have to share – and I’m not good at sharing my toys!

Even after 10 years, you still always say that you are excited to come to work everyday. Why do you think this is/what motivates you?

My passions are adrenaline sports – motor racing, racing mountain bikes. I classify managing the business as another adrenaline support. I’ve always got goals, I’ve always got achievements, I am quite ambitious. These three areas mean it’s an extension of leisure for me.

We’ve discussed how the tech industry has changed; how do you think it will continue to change?

The six-million-dollar question! Will it carry on with its concentration on home working? I think for better or worse, there will be more telemetry based on how well people are working, both from office or home-based solutions. It does concern me that a ‘big brother is watching you element’ may be coming into it, which has to be pushed back against, but other than that I think it will be more of the same. More hybrid working, more making systems integrated. One day you will be able to send your car to the shops and get your messages for you – we can’t be far from that! I think there will be a lot more integration between our IT and the rest of our living.

Are there any exciting projects that CCIT is working on right now (that you can tell us about)?

Yes, there are various projects. We are working hard on ISO27001 to enable us to get into more government-related projects. We’re also being asked to do things that are going to be very exciting for the future, our clientele is getting bigger and bigger. We love having the personal touch with our smaller clients, but the reality is there are a lot of bigger clients coming along the road. We are looking at other developments, especially into 2023, that will allow the company to grow.

Where would you like CCIT to be in 10 years’ time?

Barbados!

I second that.

It seems reasonable! I think we will evolve into two separate organisations, with the software side of things and the infrastructure side of things. We will grow those two sides of the businesses together and separately.

Do you have any advice for anyone looking to join the tech industry today?

There are so many different areas in tech that you can try to specialize in. You’ve got to be forward-thinking about what area you would like to specialize in – communications is always going to be very important, software development is important. In our industry, we need more and more people to come from schools. We would love to be more closely connected to schools and universities to show people what real life is like as people come out of university using software that is 3 – 4 years old, rather than being more cutting edge. It would be great to see more young people coming into the industry with cutting edge experience.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to your clients?

Thank you for everything and all the support you have given us. Without the clients, we would not be here. Mostly we’ve had good times, but there have been some tough times and clients have had some tough problems to solve. It’s great that they’ve stuck with us through the good and bad times. We have a lot of clients that were with us 10 years ago, and it’s great to see them still there. Personally, some of the clients have worked with me for over 30 years and are into the third generation of the family business. I started working with the grandfather and it’s now the grandchild I’m working with! That’s exciting and interesting. We are a family business and it’s nice to see other family businesses do well. We’ve been lucky enough to grow alongside our clients.
